New research by law firm Slater & Gordon has shown
that the average person suffers a staggering 10,787 injuries, illnesses
or accidents in their lifetime (just over 80 years for the study). The
study of 2000 people also found that on average we have each had seven
accidents in the last year.
The list of injuries catalogued includes minor bumps and bruises, burns
and pulled muscles, alongside illnesses or pains such as headaches,
nose bleeds, sore throats and back ache. The research showed that we
each endure at least four sore throats, six cuts and two nose bleeds
every 12 months, while four shaving cuts, two bouts of toothache and
four ‘cricked’ necks mean many of us experience pain at least once
every three days.
The study found that more than 70 per cent of the accidents mentioned
were felt to be the fault of someone else, with one in six of those
surveyed experiencing recurring pain from an accident for which they
The majority of accidents covered by the report happened at home,
however, over a third of people have been injured at work, with a fifth
of those asked saying their workplace had an obvious hazard or danger
at the time of the survey that wasn’t being dealt with correctly.
Commenting on the research, a Slater & Gordon spokesman said:
'It is disturbing that in 2013 so many accidents happened in the
workplace. Health and safety can be seen as inconvenient and
bureaucratic by some but it is designed to ensure that when we go to
work we return home to our families unharmed. Identifying risks to
health and safety and then addressing them to prevent accidents at work
is the key.'
Lawson-West Personal Injury Partner Vicky Jones commented:
“Many accidents in the workplace are easily preventable, especially if
simple guidelines from the Health & Safety Executive are
followed. Luckily for those that do suffer an accident, we are able to
claim compensation to help them recover from their injuries get their
lives back on track.”
