Four steps to an easier divorce

If youíre thinking about getting divorced, then youíve a lot to consider.
Alistair Dobson, Family Law Partner at solicitors Lawson-West in Market
Harborough, has four recommendations that can make for an easier divorce. If you
follow these four simple rules, you can save a lot of time, trouble and money.
Step 1: Avoid unnecessary conflict
If you want a quick divorce, you will have to issue your petition stating
either your spouseís adultery or unreasonable behaviour. Although divorce
proceedings are private, your spouse will see the petition that you issue, so to
avoid unnecessary conflict, itís best to keep your petition as brief and to the
point as possible. The alternative is to live apart for two years and then file
Step 2: Control your costs
There is one thing that is well worth remembering Ė arguing costs money! If
you and your partner fail to agree independently, then your solicitorís bills
will increase in proportion to the amount of time it takes to sort things out.
Put simply Ė agree, donít argue!
Step 3: Think about the children
The Court will always put the best interests of your children first when
making decisions. Make sure you do too Ė donít use them as weapons in a battle
with your soon to be ex as this can cause untold damage to future relationships
as well as the children themselves.
Step 4: Use your family
Divorce is a stressful time for the whole family. If you have children, use
their grandparents for support and a touch of normality in the childrenís lives
at a difficult time. Even if you donít have children, you can save yourself
stress by taking any help thatís available to you.
