IT security firm McAfee claims to have discovered the largest series of cyber attacks in history. There have been 72 attacks on various institutions including the United Nations, International Olympic Committee, numerous governments and various other companies. The attacks have been continuing for the last five years and are still in operation, according to McAfee's chief European Technology Officer.

The company first discovered the extent of these attacks in March earlier this year whilst reviewing the contents of a "command and control" server its researchers discovered in 2009. It has been discovered that the type of data that has been compromised is mainly intellectual property. McAfee's vice president of threat research, Dmitri Alperovitch, has written in a report which states that "what is happening to all this data ... is still largely an open question. However, if even a fraction of it is used to build better competing products or beat a competitor at a key negotiation (due to having stolen the other team's playbook), the loss represents a massive economic threat."

All 72 companies have been notified and various law enforcement agencies around the world have begun to investigate the attacks. McAfee have not yet released details of who they believe to be behind the attacks, although there is speculation that China is responsible. It will be closely followed as to who was behind the attacks and the exact companies that have affected.
