New EU law set to come into force 01 Octrober 2011 affects businesses negatively

New EU law which is to come into force on 01 October 2011, allows temporary workers that have worked for more than 12 weeks to take advantage of the same pay and benefits that are available to permanent workers. Temporary workers will be entitled to performance related bonuses, holiday pay and even overtime.

This change will be costly and affect businesses negatively especially during the current struggle to get by. Employers have been left with no option but to make temporary workers redundant before the law comes into place. A report compiled by law firm Allen & Overy Suggest that "some 462,000 of the UK's temps are likely to be made redundant in mid-December".

Unions suggest that this move will prevent workers from being exploited and they also said "With agency staff now numbering well over one million workers, and set to grow further still, the government cannot continue to place these workers without the most fundamental employment protections".
